The karst limestone formations

The formation starts with soluble rocks, typically limestone or dolomite, which are abundant in the region. These rocks are composed of calcium carbonate, which is susceptible to dissolution by natural processes. Rainwater, flowing through the landscape, absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and the soil, creating a weak carbonic acid solution. This mildly acidic water infiltrates the ground, seeping into cracks within the limestone.

Then over time, the carbonic acid dissolves the limestone, creating channels and cavities underground. As the water continues to flow through these underground channels, the dissolution process intensifies, enlarging the cavities and creating underground drainage systems. As the limestone dissolves, the overlying layers of rock and soil become unsupported, leading to their collapse. The process also results in the exposure of vertical limestone cliffs and the emergence of unique karst towers and islets, as found in Wayag and other areas of Raja Ampat.
