Diving and Cruising remote Halmahera

They still exist out there – those fairly unexplored and untouched regions within the Eastern part of Indonesia. Let us take you to the North of the beautiful remoteness of Molucca archipelago for an exclusive dive and cruise experience in Halmahera – or even take you surfing. Formed by the movement of three tectonic plates. The chain of volcanoes stretches out alongside the deep Halmahera Thrust in the middle of the Moluccu Sea – basically all the way from the South up to the North West coast of Halmahera mainland. Only accessible by boat, this beautiful volcanic arc on Halmahera’s West coast invites to just let the boat float for a while and enjoy this astonishing landscape.

Peaking under the surface – Diving Halmhera

Halmahera’s underwater world offers a wide range of species of corals, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, cephalopods, marine reptiles and mammals. The region lies within the so called Coral Triangle and is home to more species than anywhere else in the world. Most sites are suitable for snorkelling and freediving. From mellow hard coral-dominated shallow reef tops which are home to little reef sharks and turtles to more drastic and current effected steep walls. The possibilities of snorkelling, freediving and scuba diving are plenty in the region. Most of the dramatic walls and valleys are home to a huge number of sponges and soft coral, especially if you dive a bit deeper.

Bizarre shapes and colors can hypnotize divers day or night. The more current effected sites still hold a healthy number of big fish such as dog tooth tunas, marcels, rainbow runners and even mobulae and eagle rays. Banded sea snakes are often seen more in the shallow reef tops. Two of our favorite dive sites while cruising Halmahera are Tifore and Bacanan Island. Both site are perfectly suitable for beginners and advanced divers.

Diving around Tifore Island

Tifore Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the north of Halmahera. It is surrounded by a stunning coral reef, which makes it an excellent spot for both snorkeling and diving. Divers can expect to see a wide range of marine life at Tifore, such as turtles and reef sharks. One of the highlights while diving at Tifore is the chance to see the rare and elusive mandarinfish, which can be spotted during night dives.

Bacanan Island Dive

Bacan Island is located in the south of Halmahera and is known for its vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine life.
The island’s reefs are home to a variety of fish, including angelfish, butterflyfish, and lionfish, as well as larger species like barracudas and tuna. One of the most popular dive sites on Bacan is called Batu Kapal, which features a dramatic underwater rock formation and is known for its strong currents. Another popular dive site is Tanjung Sama-Sama, which offers a chance to see schools of jacks and snappers, as well as colorful soft corals and sea fans.
