Getting to Raja Ampat

How to reach the paradise of Raja Ampat?

Getting to Raja Ampat means for many people a dream coming true. Many adventurers, explorers and divers consider the region the ultimate dream destination. Whether you want to charter a private Yacht, go on a liveaboard boat trip or on a scuba diving adventure. The Raja Ampat archipelago is the ultimate cruising destination in Indonesia – off the beaten track, but defiantly worth the way.

Flights to Sorong

Sorong is the gateaway to the liveaboard cruising adventures in Raja Ampat. Sorong is also the most common starting point to reach the Islands of Raja Ampat. If you are already in Indonesia, Garuda IndonesiaBatik AirXpress, and Sriwijaya (Nam Air) offer domestic flights to Sorong. Direct flights to Sorong are offered from JakartaMakassar and Manado. There are no direct flights from Bali to Sorong. If you are flying from Bali, you will have to transfer in Makassar. The flight from Bali to Makassar takes a little more than one hour, but depending on the connection flight, a long wait at the airport of Makassar might be necessary. For this reason many travelers chose to fly from Bali to Jakarta and take a direct flight from there.

Flights to Waisai (RJM – Marinda Raja Ampat Airport)

Recently a new route was opened to fly directly into the Archipelago of Raja Ampat. Since tourism has grown and the number of people who book private charters and liveabroad boat tours from Waisai or Sorong has risen in the last years, a new daily direct route from Manado (capital of North Sulawesi) to Waisai was opened by Wings Air, a Lion Wings subsidiary in December 2016. Waisai is the capital of Raja Ampat and its airport, Marinda Airport is often listed as “Raja Ampat” (RJM) on most booking websites (bear thin in mind while booking).

However, if you wish to stay in Manado (or have to), there are couple of  beautiful and classy places nearby the airport. The Sam Ratulangi airport is located around eight miles northeast of the city centre of Manado. The following list only provides a small selection of a wider range of possible stays. It concentrates on four to five star hotels with a short distance to the airport.

  1. The Sutan Raja Hotel; this hotel offers a favourable and strategic location between the airport and harbour. It is a four-star plus hotel that leaves no wish unfulfilled.
  2. Thalassa Resort; this resort is a 30-minutes drive away from the airport and the city center of Manado can be accessed in 20 minutes. The beautiful nature make you want to stay longer
  3. The Living Peace House; the more simple and basic solution for your stay in Manado is so close to the airport that you can walk (light baggage provided). Whether you are a backpacker, transit traveller or a business visitor. This place offers a fair choice for everyone.
